Harriniva is situated over 230km north of the Arctic Circle and around 4km outside the small town of Muonio. It is deep in the heart of Finnish Lapland and is a real favourite with our clients every year.

The welcome here is very warm as this is a family run hotel and activity centre. The range of experiences on offer is pretty much unsurpassed in Lapland and it is an excellent way of tailoring your ideal Lappish adventure.

You can make things as relaxed or as exciting as you want. All you need to do is choose how long you want to travel for and then use the weekly programme to choose your preferred activities. Our holidays are based on a minimum stay of three nights (you can then add as many extra nights as you wish) and our prices include flights, transfers, half board and winter clothing for the duration of your stay.

There are husky safaris for all levels, snowmobile trips, reindeer encounters and an abundance of Northern Lights safaris to take advantage of. You can try cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, go on a reindeer sleigh ride or simply relax with a good book. If you would like you can also visit or spend the night at Torassieppi Winter Village or spend one night in a glass igloo at Levi (see pricing tab for details).

If you want to have some time out then there is also the Aurora Wellness Centre where spa treatments can be arranged.

You can really make your holiday your own and if different members of your group want to do different things then that is easy to arrange. The choice is yours.

We love Harriniva as a destination and judging from the feedback we get, so do our clients.

Suitable for

People of all ages. Although these holidays are principally operated for adults, due to the gentle nature of the activities there may on occasion be children participating in the activities (5 years and up) although this is primarily during the peak holiday periods and kept to a minimum. There may also be children staying in the same accommodation during peak holiday weeks.

If you would like to travel with children under the age of 18 then please see our sister company’s website for further details – Activities Abroad.

Harriniva Wilderness Hotel

Next to the remote town of Muonio, deep in the heart of North West Lapland, Harriniva encapsulates the ideal Finnish wilderness location.

Harriniva is a pioneer for winter activity holidays and there are few places with greater knowledge and understanding of the vast, snow-laden, arctic playground that a Finnish winter offers.

With almost 30 years’ experience behind them, their range of activities on offer is second to none with a fantastic variety to choose from including huskies, snowmobiles, Northern Light searches, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and much more.

The hotel is an annual favourite with our guests and its combination of a warm welcome, unforgettable experiences and delightful Scandinavian-style accommodation is sure to be inviting to all.

Hotel Facilities
The hotel offers separate sauna facilities for men and women which are free of charge in the evenings for around three hours. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel and, in addition, two PCs are available in the reception area for guest use.

The restaurant has three dining areas and serves simple and hearty food - ideal sustenance for outdoor activities and Aurora watching. Breakfast is a Scandinavian-style buffet offering a wide selection of options and your evening meal is generally a salad buffet followed by a set main meal and dessert.

There is also a pub on site which is a great place to gather with fellow guests to discuss your Lappish adventures.

Harriniva operates an ‘Aurora Alarm’ which is included in some itineraries or can be arranged in advance.

There is the Aurora Wellness Centre situated on the river bank offering a variety of therapies and treatments. At busy times these should be booked in advance.

In the reception building there is a small souvenir shop where you can buy postcards and pick up some locally crafted goods.

Harriniva accepts all major credit cards and you can also exchange currency at reception. There are no cashpoints available on site.

Room types
The hotel has 64 en-suite double/twin hotel rooms with a shower and hairdryer. Socialising in the evenings is encouraged, so there are no televisions in the rooms but a TV room is available in the hotel. Tea and coffee can be purchased from reception.

Wilderness Cabins
Any trip which incorporates an overnight safari will include at least one night in a wilderness cabin. There can be few better ways to escape the reality of everyday life than a night in the wilds.

The remote location of the cabins ensures there is little or no light pollution, creating the best possible chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis.

Some of the cabins are basic (no electricity or running water) but all are comfortable and cosy once the fire is going. Everyone pitches in to help collect water and firewood, which adds to the experience of the great outdoors!

Your guide will prepare your meals over an open fire (if you have any dietary requirements please let us know at the time of booking). Despite the wilderness locations, the meals that the guides produce always get wonderful feedback from our clients every year.

The wilderness cabins do not have shower or bathroom facilities but with it being Finland there is always a sauna on hand to steam clean in. Toilets are generally compostable and are situated a short walk from the cabin. We would suggest a head torch as a handy piece of equipment to take for any nocturnal visits!

Sleeping arrangements are in dormitory style areas where you will sleep in arctic grade sleeping bags and, should you feel the cold, possibly your thermals. The cabins tend to get toasty warm once the fire has been blazing for a while.

Whilst on overnight safaris, your luggage will be securely stored at the hotel and valuables can be left in the hotel safe.

Safari Houses and Cabins
On our multi-day husky and snowmobile safaris you will spend some nights in shared safari houses or cabins at the beginning and end of your trip. Harriniva has a variety that they use, some of which are on site and others which are situated 3km from Harriniva. Guests will be transferred to the hotel for all meals if they are staying off site.

Each safari house or cabin has its own shower, toilet and sauna.

Our tailor made programmes allow you to design your own holiday. Simply decide when you want to travel and for how long (we recommend a minimum of three nights) then match your stay to the activities available below. These are all subject to availability and we would recommend booking them in advance with us to confirm your places

Flights, transfers and cold weather clothing for the duration of your stay are included.

Please note: Activity schedules are subject to change. Duration of activity includes transfer times and breaks. All distances are approximate.

Snowmobile safaris: Snowmobile drivers must be 18 years old and hold a valid driving licence.

Single snowmobiles: All snowmobile safaris are based on two people sharing. If this is not possible in your party then the supplement will be automatically applicable to one member of the group.
