This is possibly one of the most exhilarating tours that we offer. If you’ve been on a dog sled safari or snowmobiles before and were left longing for more, then this is the holiday for you, but it is not for the faint-hearted.

You set off from Harriniva on powerful snowmobiles and head to the far remote north for two days. Here you will spend full days on the snowmobiles and travel up to 200km per day. You will arrive at Kilpisjärvi and discover why the Finns themselves spend their April holidays in this region. The days are long, the scenery unbelievable, the snow is deep and the sun will hopefully be shining.

You switch transport in Kilpisjärvi and head out onto the trail for two days in the wilderness with your own team of huskies. You will spend the night either under canvas or in a wilderness cabin depending on the weather conditions.

On your return to Kilpisjärvi you will head back south by snowmobile for the epic journey back to Harriniva.

On this once in a lifetime adventure you will get long days, awe-inspiring scenery and some remarkably unique adventures.

Suitable for

Anybody aged 18 years and over.  This is a demanding itinerary with long days in the wilderness and on snowmobiles. You should have a good level of fitness to participate and must have a full driving licence.

Our Opinion

"The title of this trip says it all really. With three days of snowmobiling and two days of husky safaris it is not for the faint hearted, but it is a thrilling way to really take advantage of the landscape. This is probably the most active trip we have and is great for anyone looking for a once in a lifetime venture. The scenery that surrounds Harriniva is truly stunning and this trip lets you explore it in the best way possible."  Barry Nolan

Harriniva Wilderness Hotel

Next to the remote town of Muonio, deep in the heart of North West Lapland, Harriniva encapsulates the ideal Finnish wilderness location.

Harriniva is a pioneer for winter activity holidays and there are few places with greater knowledge and understanding of the vast, snow-laden, arctic playground that a Finnish winter offers.

With almost 30 years’ experience behind them, their range of activities on offer is second to none with a fantastic variety to choose from including huskies, snowmobiles, Northern Light searches, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and much more.

The hotel is an annual favourite with our guests and its combination of a warm welcome, unforgettable experiences and delightful Scandinavian-style accommodation is sure to be inviting to all.

Hotel Facilities
The hotel offers separate sauna facilities for men and women which are free of charge in the evenings for around three hours. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel and, in addition, two PCs are available in the reception area for guest use.

The restaurant has three dining areas and serves simple and hearty food - ideal sustenance for outdoor activities and Aurora watching. Breakfast is a Scandinavian-style buffet offering a wide selection of options and your evening meal is generally a salad buffet followed by a set main meal and dessert.

There is also a pub on site which is a great place to gather with fellow guests to discuss your Lappish adventures.

Harriniva operates an ‘Aurora Alarm’ which is included in some itineraries or can be arranged in advance.

There is the Aurora Wellness Centre situated on the river bank offering a variety of therapies and treatments. At busy times these should be booked in advance.

In the reception building there is a small souvenir shop where you can buy postcards and pick up some locally crafted goods.

Harriniva accepts all major credit cards and you can also exchange currency at reception. There are no cashpoints available on site.

Room types
The hotel has 64 en-suite double/twin hotel rooms with a shower and hairdryer. Socialising in the evenings is encouraged, so there are no televisions in the rooms but a TV room is available in the hotel. Tea and coffee can be purchased from reception.

Wilderness Cabins
Any trip which incorporates an overnight safari will include at least one night in a wilderness cabin. There can be few better ways to escape the reality of everyday life than a night in the wilds.

The remote location of the cabins ensures there is little or no light pollution, creating the best possible chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis.

Some of the cabins are basic (no electricity or running water) but all are comfortable and cosy once the fire is going. Everyone pitches in to help collect water and firewood, which adds to the experience of the great outdoors!

Your guide will prepare your meals over an open fire (if you have any dietary requirements please let us know at the time of booking). Despite the wilderness locations, the meals that the guides produce always get wonderful feedback from our clients every year.

The wilderness cabins do not have shower or bathroom facilities but with it being Finland there is always a sauna on hand to steam clean in. Toilets are generally compostable and are situated a short walk from the cabin. We would suggest a head torch as a handy piece of equipment to take for any nocturnal visits!

Sleeping arrangements are in dormitory style areas where you will sleep in arctic grade sleeping bags and, should you feel the cold, possibly your thermals. The cabins tend to get toasty warm once the fire has been blazing for a while.

Whilst on overnight safaris, your luggage will be securely stored at the hotel and valuables can be left in the hotel safe.

Safari Houses and Cabins
On our multi-day husky and snowmobile safaris you will spend some nights in shared safari houses or cabins at the beginning and end of your trip. Harriniva has a variety that they use, some of which are on site and others which are situated 3km from Harriniva. Guests will be transferred to the hotel for all meals if they are staying off site.

Each safari house or cabin has its own shower, toilet and sauna.

Day 1: Flights and transfers
You will be greeted at the Airport and transferred to Harriniva to enjoy a welcome meal before seeing your accommodation for the night - a wonderful cosy shared log cabin.

Day 2: Snowmobile safari to Galdotieva (approximately 110km)
After breakfast you will meet with your guide and be issued with your cold weather clothing. Your guide will then introduce you to your snowmobile and give you a safety demonstration and full briefing on these 600cc machines.

You will head north today, travelling about 110km. There will be a picnic lunch on the trail. Today’s route is remarkable as you can see the landscape changing from endless snowy forests to a more hilly and rugged terrain as you approach the Norwegian border.

You will overnight in cabins at Galdotieva Fell Centre and dinner will be served in the restaurant.

Day 3: Snowmobile to Kilpisjärvi (approximately 150km)
This morning the safari continues and you are led by your guide through the open, treeless mountain landscape. The scenery today is more dramatic than yesterday’s softer views. You will have lunch en-route and in the evening you will reach the beautiful village of Kilpisjärvi, close to the three countries (Finland, Norway, Sweden) meeting point.

You will feel a real sense of achievement on arrival at your cabins as you will have completed a truly thrilling adventure to get here. The sauna and dinner await and you will spend the night in shared log cabins.

Day 4: Husky safari to a wilderness cabin (approximately 30-40km 25km)
Today you switch the roar of an engine for the barking of the huskies, eager for you to all get out on the trail. Dog sledding may not be as fast as snowmobiling but the thrills are just as great and you get a sense of being much closer to the wilderness that surrounds you as you aren’t looking at it from behind a visor.

You will meet your team of 4-5 dogs; they’ll probably be making a racket in anticipation of the trail. As soon as you have had your safety briefing you are on your way; the only sound you will hear from the dogs is their paws on the snow. Lunch will be served by an open fire.

You will sleep in a wilderness cabin or if the weather conditions allow you may stay under canvas tonight after enjoying an evening meal cooked around an open fire.

Day 5: Husky safari to Kilpisjärvi (approximately 25 km)
Once both yourself and the dogs have had breakfast and packed up ready to continue on the safari, you will begin to head back to Kilpisjärvi. By now you will have hopefully gained the respect of your huskies and you will be able to notice a difference as they will be much more responsive to your commands. This means you have more time to relax and let them do the work whilst you enjoy the beautiful scenery passing you by.

You will have a picnic lunch during your safari.

Day 6: Snowmobile along the Victoria Trail (approximately 200km)
Make sure you have a hearty breakfast this morning as you have a good day on the snowmobiles ahead of you! You will travel back to Harriniva today along the Victoria Trail which follows the Swedish border. You will travel approximately 200km; it’s an epic journey through breathtaking scenery.

A picnic lunch will be served en-route.

When you arrive back to the hotel, a well-earned relaxing sauna and farewell dinner will be waiting for you.

Day 7: Departure, transfers and flights
After breakfast you will transfer back to the Airport for your return flights home.
